We say hello to Lucas Grönlund!
Lucas is 24 years old, lives in Uppsala and is in the final stages of both his third year and his entire education. Born and raised in Bålsta, lived in Stockholm during high school and then Luxembourg for six months. A year or so after he came back to Sweden, he chose to study Systems Science here in Uppsala and that's how it all started...
In parallel with his studies, he has also run the company Code and Release Sweden AB, as well as a few other projects.
I didn't really have a good grasp of systems science and what it entailed, but I was actually mostly looking for different IT programs. I felt that I wouldn't really enjoy several of the technical programs such as computer science and civil engineering programs precisely because they contain a lot of mathematics.
No, I wouldn't say that. Mathematics played a pretty big role in my choice of education, as it's something I've always had a bit of difficulty with.
Then I heard about systems science and heard that it was more about the connection between “human and computer” and felt that it suited me much better. I read that systems science in Uppsala was among the best and most highly regarded programs, which is why I chose to study here.
The fact that I already lived nearby and was familiar with the city made the choice even easier.
Yes, really! Even though the education contains a lot of programming, I think there has been relatively little focus on mathematics, which I see as very positive! The only thing I miss a bit in the education is courses in project management and the like, but you still have the opportunity to choose these before your elective courses in semester three.
Actually, I've more or less had an interest in computers ever since I was 3 years old when my Dad bought the first IBM computer (one of the first home computers), so you could say it's been a bit of a lifelong interest!
The first time I came into contact with programming was through HTML. I wanted to learn how to create websites using the book “HTML for dummies” but to be completely honest it was very slow and the websites were also quite bad.. It was difficult to get started with it “for real” before I actually started studying systems science. It was a real kick-start for programming! I actually started even before the first course and installed Visual Studio to get started as quickly as possible.
To continue learning more after the first programming course, I started a few different projects on the side that I have continued with ever since.
I have always been quite driven and enterprising as a person, which meant that I immediately started projects alongside my studies. Actually, I started my first real project “nightclub list” even before the education. It is a website where you can read about different nightclubs in Stockholm and get information about opening hours, prices, etc. The real programming projects didn’t start until after I started the education.
Now I run the company Code and Release Sweden AB, which is a consulting company that sells apps and develops other companies' ideas. I mainly build products for other companies, simply put.
The most recent assignment we had was a project in VR (Virtual Reality) for a real estate company where you can see housing projects in VR even before the building has begun.
I also helped start Capsule, a co-working space in Uppsala where you can work together and new ideas can be born. We received a grant of 200,000 from the municipality to start Capsule, which was a very grateful and educational experience!
It's important to have a skill that is valuable to others. Simply put, become good at something that others need.
Work systematically and concisely. See it as a marathon – to get to the finish line, you can't sprint. Everything is a long-term process and it has to take the time it takes. Never stand still, it's better to start than to think too much. Do your thing, talk to people and spread the word about your knowledge. In the end, you will find customers!
Sundays are my catch-up day where I work through a long to-do list where I go through things that I didn't have time to do during the week. After working through that list, I sit down and build on something new, for example an app or program.
It is a way to relax to be able to check off all the items on the to-do list and provides a good overview and structure of things, and in this way you also counteract too much procrastination.
Of course! Then I like to play computer games, especially Dota 2. I also run a lot and will actually participate in a marathon soon. There will also be some comics from time to time!
At the turn of the year I'm starting as a junior project manager for a large IT company. It's going to be really exciting! I felt it was a good opportunity to gain experience from a slightly larger company.
I'm going to put my own companies on hold now that I'm starting my new job. We'll see in the future if I get back to running them, but I probably will because I think it's incredibly fun!
Then I dream of going to Silicon Valley and working there at one of the top tech companies in the world.
We have no doubt that you will succeed, Lucas. Good luck in your new job and don't forget us when you try your luck in Silicon Valley!
